AI recommendations are rising fast, but consumers still verify businesses on Google, through reviews, and on websites before deciding who to trust.

AI hasn’t replaced SEO—it’s expanded it. Consistent, accurate information across your website, Google Business Profile, and trusted sources now matters more than ever. We need to evolve and embrace AI”

KITCHENER, ON, CANADA, August 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of how consumers find local businesses, but it has not replaced Google, reviews, or websites in the decision-making process.

The TDM Agency 2026 Small Business Search Study, a secondary analysis of recent consumer research, found that people increasingly move across multiple platforms before deciding which business to trust and contact.

Key findings reviewed in the study include:

84% searched online for a local business in the past three months
Around 75% used more than one platform during their most recent search
23% used an AI tool during their last local-business search
31% use AI for local recommendations at least monthly
45% used AI for local recommendations in the past year, compared with 6% the year before

The analysis draws mainly on BrightLocal’s 2026 research, along with findings from the Pew Research Center, Constant Contact, and current Google guidance.

“Search is no longer just about ranking on Google,” said Anurag B, Chief Strategist at TDM Agency. “A customer might discover a business through AI, verify it on Google, read reviews and then visit the website. Every one of those steps can influence whether they make contact.”

AI Is Growing, But Consumers Still Verify

BrightLocal’s research found that 88% of AI users check the legitimacy or source of reviews surfaced through AI tools. An AI recommendation may help a business get discovered, but it does not automatically establish trust.

Consumers may still check Google reviews, business listings and websites before deciding whether a company is credible. Consistent information therefore matters across major digital touchpoints.

Local Search Is Becoming a Multi-Platform Journey

A consumer may discover a company on social media, see it in Google Maps, ask an AI platform for recommendations, read reviews and then visit the website before making contact.

Strong visibility on one platform may introduce the business, while conflicting information elsewhere can weaken confidence. TDM Agency says SEO, local search, reviews and website content should be viewed as connected parts of the same journey.

AI Summaries Are Changing Google Behaviour

Pew Research Center found that users were less likely to click traditional results when Google displayed an AI-generated summary. Traditional results received clicks on approximately 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when no AI summary appeared.

Users were also more likely to end their browsing session after viewing an AI summary.

For businesses, rankings and traffic may no longer tell the full story. A customer can encounter a company name, service or review information directly in search without visiting the website.

TDM Agency says businesses should also measure phone calls, Google Business Profile activity, enquiries, qualified leads and conversions.

Traditional SEO Foundations Still Matter

Despite interest in GEO, AEO and AI SEO, Google continues to emphasize established fundamentals: useful original content, accessible websites, accurate business information and updated Google Business Profiles.

For local search, Google continues to identify relevance, distance and prominence as key factors. Google has also said businesses do not need a separate AI website or special AI-only optimization simply to be eligible for generative search experiences.

TDM Agency says AI visibility should be built on strong SEO foundations, not treated as a replacement for them.

AI Is Becoming Part of a Business’s First Impression

AI tools can summarize a company and its services before a user reaches its website. Outdated or conflicting information can therefore influence a customer earlier in the decision process.

“The question is no longer simply ‘Can people find us?’” said Anurag B. “Businesses also need to ask, ‘Does the internet understand us correctly?’ If your website says one thing, your Google profile says another and other websites contain old information, you are creating unnecessary uncertainty.”

Businesses should regularly review their locations, services, contact details and areas of expertise across important online sources.

Five Priorities for Small Businesses in 2026

Based on the research reviewed, TDM Agency identifies five priorities:

Keep business information consistent across websites, Google Business Profiles and important third-party platforms
Build genuine customer reviews that reflect real experiences
Publish original expertise, useful insights and local knowledge
Treat Google Search, Maps, reviews, social media and AI as connected touchpoints
Measure leads, calls and conversions alongside rankings and website traffic

SEO is becoming less about winning one keyword and more about building a credible presence wherever customers research a business.

Search Is Becoming a Trust System

The next phase of search is unlikely to be defined by AI simply replacing Google. Consumers are increasingly moving between several sources before deciding.

A customer may discover a business through social media, ask AI for recommendations, verify it on Google, and read reviews before visiting the website. Businesses best positioned for this environment will present clear, accurate information wherever customers encounter them.
