ICE agents may remain at US airports despite TSA back pay restoration
White House Border Czar Tom Homan explained that ICE’s continued presence depends on whether TSA personnel return to their duties, emphasizing that heightened threats necessitate sustained security measures. He added that he is coordinating closely with both the TSA administrator and the ICE director to evaluate the needs at each airport.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday to use existing funds to cover TSA salaries, with payments expected to begin as early as Monday or Tuesday, according to reports.
The funding deadlock has already led to long lines at major airports due to staff shortages, while Democrats in Congress continue to block full appropriations, prolonging both the partial government shutdown and travel disruptions.
As the shutdown reached its 45th day—the longest in U.S. history—negotiations remained stalled. Democrats are demanding significant reforms to ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), while President Trump insists any deal must include the SAVE America Act, initially proposed in January 2025, which requires proof of U.S. citizenship for federal voter registration.
Trump has also encouraged Republicans to consider eliminating the Senate filibuster to pass funding legislation without needing 60 votes.
