Israel Says It Downed Iranian Air Force YAK-130 Aircraft

(MENAFN) An Israeli F-35 stealth fighter has downed an Iranian Air Force YAK-130 combat aircraft above Tehran, the Israeli military announced Wednesday — a milestone it described as the "first shootdown in history" of a manned fighter jet by an F-35.

The aerial engagement unfolded shortly after Israel's armed forces launched what they characterized as "broad scale" airstrikes against Iranian targets across the capital, deepening an offensive that has already reshaped the region's military landscape.

Beyond the historic aerial engagement, the Israeli military said it struck dozens of facilities linked to Iran's internal security apparatus and the paramilitary Basij force, further degrading Tehran's defense and security infrastructure.

The strike campaign is part of a sustained, coordinated offensive that Israel and the United States have been conducting since Saturday — an assault that has claimed hundreds of lives, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and senior military commanders. Tehran has responded in kind, launching waves of missiles and drones toward Israel and Gulf states hosting US military assets, pushing the broader conflict to a combustible new threshold.

The Israeli army has not released further details on the aerial engagement, including pilot identities or the precise circumstances that led to the intercept.
