US Representatives Reject Measure Limiting Army Action Against Iran
"So long as ‘Death to America’ remains the rallying cry of the Iranian regime, Iran will remain a persistent and serious threat to our men and women in uniform, our allies, and global stability," said Josh Gottheimer and Mike Lawler.
The two representatives made clear that they do not support the Massie-Khanna War Powers Resolution, which seeks to block the use of US military force against Iran without prior authorization from Congress.
The proposal was introduced by Representatives Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna and would require explicit congressional approval before any military engagement with Iran could proceed.
While expressing support for legislative oversight, Gottheimer and Lawler emphasized that such oversight must not impede national security decision-making. They described congressional review and discussion as "absolutely vital."
"However, this resolution would restrict the flexibility needed to respond to real and evolving threats and risks signaling weakness at a dangerous moment," they added.
The lawmakers further stressed that any prospective military operations should comply with existing legal frameworks, including notification requirements under the War Powers Act.
"It is also essential that the appropriate committees are fully and promptly briefed. Congress must not limit our ability to protect Americans and our allies," they added.
