Nine Reported Dead as Heavy Rains Cause Mudslides in Uganda
The first disaster struck Thursday morning in Bukwo district, where a mudslide engulfed a home, killing three children from the same family.
"Our volunteers are on the ground conducting assessments," Irene Nakasiita, URCS spokesperson, said in a statement, noting that a detailed report would be issued later.
Another mudslide hit nearby Kween district on Wednesday night, claiming six lives in a separate incident.
Access to Bukwo remains challenging, Nakasiita added, due to ongoing rains and poor road conditions that have slowed emergency response efforts.
Rescue teams are collaborating with local authorities and community members to continue recovery and rescue operations, she said.
The Elgon sub-region of eastern Uganda, known for its mountainous terrain, frequently faces landslides during rainy seasons. Past deadly mudslides in the area have been linked to deforestation and unstable slopes.
