U.S. Judge Bars Trump’s Attempt to Defund Sanctuary Cities

(MENAFN) A U.S. federal judge on Friday broadened a nationwide block on the Trump administration’s attempt to strip federal funding from dozens of sanctuary cities and counties, escalating a key legal battle over immigration enforcement.

District Judge William Orrick, who in April declared the funding freeze unconstitutional, expanded his injunction to cover a wider group of jurisdictions, now including Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, Denver, and Albuquerque. His initial ruling applied to more than a dozen areas, including San Francisco, Sacramento, Minneapolis, and Seattle.

In the new order, Orrick noted that the administration did not oppose extending the injunction to additional plaintiffs, aside from maintaining its belief that the original ruling was flawed—a stance already under appeal.

Orrick also prohibited the administration from imposing immigration-related conditions on two specific federal grant programs.

President Donald Trump initiated the funding crackdown hours after taking office in January, directing agencies to block financial support to jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Weeks later, he ordered that federal money should not assist what the administration described as illegal immigration.

Attorney General Pam Bondi echoed that policy, stating the Justice Department would withhold grants from sanctuary jurisdictions. The administration argued these cities obstruct federal enforcement efforts and prevent ICE from detaining undocumented immigrants, including those with violent criminal histories.

The move has triggered a flurry of lawsuits nationwide. Most recently, 20 states sued the federal government over the Justice Department’s attempt to tie crime victim assistance grants to local immigration enforcement efforts.
