Errani, Vavassori successfully retain their US Open mixed doubles crown
The victory earned them a boosted prize purse of $1 million (£740,000)—a dramatic rise from the \$200,000 (£148,000) they collected last year. The larger payout was part of a tournament overhaul aimed at attracting top singles names such as Iga Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic. As a result, Errani and Vavassori were the only established doubles pairing among the 16 teams competing.
"This is for all the doubles players who couldn't play this tournament," said Errani, while her partner added: "We have been on a mission." Their celebrations made the point clear, with Vavassori lifting Errani in delight after securing another Grand Slam trophy.
Earlier on Wednesday, Britain’s Jack Draper and American Jessica Pegula had fallen in the semifinals to Swiatek and Casper Ruud.
The US Open’s decision to “reimagine” mixed doubles—introducing a shortened scoring system in early rounds and scheduling matches before the singles draw—sparked sharp criticism from many doubles specialists. Errani and Vavassori had been among the most outspoken, issuing a joint statement at the time calling the changes “profoundly wrong.”
Initially at risk of missing out because of low singles rankings, the Italian duo ultimately received a wildcard. Most doubles players, however, were excluded from the event as organizers prioritized singles stars.
Even Swiatek acknowledged their achievement, saying with a smile: "I guess you proved doubles players are smarter tactically than singles players."
Vavassori had already made clear after their opening two victories that they were playing not only for themselves but also on behalf of doubles professionals sidelined by the revamped format.
