PSG open their Ligue 1 title defence with hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nantes
The Portuguese midfielder’s shot midway through the half took a heavy deflection off defender Chidozie Awaziem, wrong-footing goalkeeper Anthony Lopes to secure the win.
PSG coach Luis Enrique made seven changes to his starting XI following the midweek UEFA Super Cup triumph over Tottenham. With the squad only beginning pre-season training on August 6 after a busy summer capped by a Club World Cup final appearance, the team is still working toward full sharpness.
Despite limited preparation and no pre-season friendlies, PSG controlled much of the match, limiting Nantes — playing their first game under new coach Luis Castro — to few chances.
Luis Enrique praised the result, saying the players showed determination despite needing more time to reach peak form.
The game also saw the debuts of Ukraine defender Illia Zabarnyi, who completed a €66 million move from Bournemouth, and goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, signed from Lille to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma as first choice.
