European Leaders Highlight Ukraine’s Security Needs
(MENAFN) European heads of state expressed approval for US President Donald Trump’s attempts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, while underscoring that “a diplomatic solution must protect the “vital security interests" of Ukraine and the continent.
In a joint statement on Saturday, European leaders and the EU declared, "We welcome President Trump’s work to stop the killing in Ukraine, end the Russian Federation’s war of aggression, and achieve just and lasting peace and security for Ukraine."
The statement emphasized that only a strategy merging active diplomatic engagement, consistent assistance to Ukraine, and sustained pressure on Russia to halt its military actions can bring success.
This position was affirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Their remarks came ahead of Trump’s scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska next Friday, where the course of the Ukraine war will be a primary topic of discussion.
"We stand ready to support this work diplomatically as well as by upholding our substantive military and financial support to Ukraine, including through the work of the Coalition of the Willing, and by upholding and imposing restrictive measures against the Russian Federation," the statement continued.
The leaders concluded that the “vital interests” at stake involve strong and reliable security guarantees, enabling Ukraine to effectively safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
