Trump pledges to untangle US from Ukraine’s situation
In response to a question about continued U.S. financial support for Ukraine amid reports of heightened conscription efforts by Kiev, Trump said, “This is Biden’s war. This is not my war. I’m here to get us out of it. It’s a mess, and I’m here to get us out.”
The inquiry referenced a recent move by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who issued a directive permitting the conscription of men over 60 years old. Trump replied, “I haven’t heard that, when you say about 60-year-old men,” before reiterating, “But this is Biden’s war. And we’re working very hard to get us out.”
In recent weeks, Trump has floated the possibility of implementing aggressive economic actions, including 100% tariffs and the application of secondary sanctions on nations continuing to engage in trade with Russia. These proposed steps are intended to exert pressure on Moscow to agree to a ceasefire, though Russia has sharply criticized such measures, calling them unlawful.
When pressed on whether he would move forward with the proposed sanctions, Trump noted that the final decision would follow an upcoming diplomatic engagement in Russia. His special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is scheduled to attend the meeting.
“I never said a percentage [for tariffs], but we’ll be doing quite a bit of that,” Trump said. “We have a meeting with Russia tomorrow [on Wednesday]… We’ll make that determination at that time.”
