S-Africa employs new law enforcement minister
(MENAFN) Firoz Cachalia has been appointed South Africa’s new Police Minister, pledging to fulfill his duties “without fear or favor” amid ongoing allegations of widespread corruption within the country’s security forces.
Speaking after his swearing-in ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday, Cachalia presented a calm yet determined approach to tackling South Africa’s escalating crime challenges. He emphasized his focus on the task ahead rather than personal or political ambitions, committing to act under the guidance of President Cyril Ramaphosa as a Cabinet member.
A constitutional law expert and former chair of the National Anti-Corruption Council, Cachalia acknowledged the serious responsibility of his role during a time marked by rising violent crime, corruption, and public distrust in the police. He assured citizens that their safety remains a top priority.
While refraining from commenting on specific operational issues before meeting National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, scheduled for Thursday, Cachalia linked his prior anti-corruption work to his new position. He expressed determination to ensure the council’s anti-corruption recommendations are actively implemented. Plans include convening police and council leadership to coordinate reforms, focusing on whistleblower protection and accountability.
Cachalia also highlighted the importance of collaboration with Justice Minister Ronald Lamola, stressing that fighting corruption requires coordinated efforts across government departments.
Clarifying his role, Cachalia stated he is a full minister, not an acting one. Masemola expressed full support for Cachalia’s leadership.
The appointment follows President Ramaphosa’s decision to place former Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave amid explosive corruption allegations, including political interference and involvement in drug trafficking, made by KZN Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
