S-Africa dismisses envoy absence in US tariff discussions

(MENAFN) South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, has said the absence of an ambassador in Washington has not hindered Pretoria’s efforts to engage the US over recently announced tariffs. His comments came during a joint press briefing on Monday with Trade Minister Parks Tau at the Germiston Civic Centre in Ekurhuleni.

Lamola acknowledged that the previous ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, was expelled in March, complicating the appointment of a successor. He emphasized, however, that President Cyril Ramaphosa remains committed to the relationship with the US and will announce a new ambassador in due course, noting that the process is already well underway.

The US, under President Donald Trump, has introduced steep tariffs—30% on South African goods—set to begin on August 8. In comparison, other African countries like Lesotho and Zimbabwe will face only 15% duties.

Addressing concerns over the impact of the vacant ambassadorial post, Lamola stated that trade negotiations are handled by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC), supported by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), not by ambassadors. South Africa currently has a chargé d’affaires stationed in Washington who supports engagement efforts but does not lead negotiations.

Lamola dismissed claims that the absence of a full ambassador contributed to South Africa’s inability to secure a tariff exemption. “If that were the case,” he said, “other countries with ambassadors wouldn’t face similar trade issues. This is a global challenge, not just South Africa’s.”

Former ambassador Rasool was removed from his post after making critical remarks during a webinar in early 2025. He had voiced concerns about the ideological implications of the “Make America Great Again” movement and warned of U.S. resistance to a shifting global order. He also criticized South Africa’s transition of the G20 presidency to the US.

Lamola confirmed that the president is in the final stages of selecting a new ambassador, stressing that the decision rests solely with Ramaphosa, though consultation may occur as needed.
